Wakefield Town Hall to be lit green to mark start of Ramadan

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by Muslims as a month of fasting, prayer and reflection.
One of the Five Pillars of Islam, fasting is important during Ramadan as it allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to Allah, or God.

Hide AdTo mark the occasion, Wakefield Council have unveiled plans to light the town hall clock tower green this evening.
Councillor Michael Graham Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “We know that Ramadan is a very important time in the Islamic calendar for our Muslim residents and would like to show our support.
“We appreciate that things will be a little different again this year due to the pandemic but I wish our Muslim community Ramadan Mubarak and please stay safe.”
The tower will also be lit green on May 12 to celebrate Eid and the end of Ramadan.

Hide AdThe clock tower is often lit with bright colours to mark special events, and has previously been flooded with light for events including International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ and the NHS' birthday.
